As a frequent Windows 10 user, you may have at one or more times experienced an ominous Blue Screen of Death error with an UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error message at the bottom of the screen. The annoying Blue Screen message is usually followed by abrupt freezing or shutdown of your system leaving you apprehensive and confused. What does this warning portend? And what causes it?

An UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODETRAP is one issue that shows on the BSoD and it's mainly caused by a bad or outdated driver of one of your devices. Updating it should make the problem disappear. Unfortunately, Blue Screen of Death appearances are not that uncommon. That's why our BSoD fix hub can be very useful when you encounter one of them. You can also use the troubleshooter named SFC scan for the Unexpected Kernel Mode Trap Windows. If you have any broken files in your system, this will help you scan them. This command-line tool will repair the corrupt system files. Try this one as it is worth trying! First, go to the Start Menu on the bottom part of the screen.

  1. Enter the Advanced Startup. Easiest way to do this is to go to the Start Menu and click the restart.
  2. Most of the time, the UNEXPECTEDKERNELMODETRAP error is caused by incompatible, faulty or outdated drivers. So you should update your available device drivers to see if it fixes your problem. Whether you choose to update the device drivers manually, using Windows Update, or you use a trusted third party product, it’s essential that you have the latest correct device drivers for your operating system at all times.
  3. This mini tool actually features an award-winning technology that finds the latest driver updates needed on your computer. The best thing about Slimware Driver updates is that it automatically identifies the necessary downloads and list it for you to download and install.

The UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error is a bug that indicates that the CPU generated a trap which the kernel was unable or is not allowed to catch or the system is in an unrecoverable error. It’s an error that affects Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 Systems.

Common causes of this anomaly are hardware related. Below is an outline of the most notorious causes for this type of error:

Faulty RAM module

This mostly occurs when the RAM occasionally triggers read and write errors. When this happens, a Blue Screen error is suddenly splashed on the screen and the PC freezes or shuts down. If updating your drivers (see guide below) doesn’t help to fix the UNEXPECTED KERNEL error, then this might be the problem, and we suggest that you scan the memory to see if it is. In case errors are found, a replacement of the RAM module is advised.

Damaged and incompatible peripheral devices

These faulty hardware components may comprise faulty PCI cards and VGA cards.

Corrupt device drivers

Sometimes, users can inadvertently download device drivers from untrusted websites only to discover that the drivers are corrupt, incompatible or outdated triggering the Blue screen error. A similar scenario would play out when upgrading to a newer version of Windows e.g. from Windows 7 to Windows 8 or downgrading from a current to an older version e.g. from Windows 10 to Windows 8.1.
Other factors that could trigger this kind of error include

  • damaged registry & system files
  • hardware components covered in dust

Dust is the main culprit behind overheating of the of motherboard components. Dust clogs up the CPU fan and obstructs free air circulation leading to building up of heat within the motherboard. And as we all know, heat is a great enemy to electronic devices, including PCs.

Fixing UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error

Fortunately, the annoying error can be remedied and users can get back to their normal PC operations. Below, we have outlined some of the antidotes to this problem.

Clean up dusty components of your system

To keep your system temperature at optimal levels, regular cleanup/dusting of internal components is highly encouraged. Before you begin, ensure that the PC is powered off. Disconnect any peripheral devices such as USB drives, printers etc. Open the haul and dust the motherboard components, starting with the CPU fan, memory modules, PCI slots and extend the dusting to other parts as well. After thorough dusting, assemble all the parts and reconnect the devices to your PC.

Check recently installed hardware/drivers

If you have newly installed any piece of hardware or drivers in your system and you suddenly start getting UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error, that is a pointer that the culprit is the newly installed component or software and you need to remove/uninstall it. If you cannot pinpoint exactly which software/drivers are causing the problem, you can use the System Restore tool which will allow you to roll back your system to a time when your operating system was functioning as expected.

In addition, you should verify that all hardware components such as network cards, graphics card, and other PCI cards are compatible with your Windows 10 system. If any incompatibilities occur, the components should be removed and swapped with compatible ones.

Update system drivers

If you have recently downgraded your version of Windows and are getting the UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error, you need to update your device drivers to their latest version. You can either run automatic driver updates or manually update drivers.

To manually update drivers

  1. Press Windows Key + R on the keyboard and type devmgmt.msc in the text field as shown below. Click ‘OK’ or press Enter.
  2. This takes you to Device Manager Snap-In and gives you a glance of all the systems’ devices as shown below.
  3. Click on the arrow next to the device whose driver you wish to update. This will display the drivers associated with that device. Right click on the driver, and from the menu that appears, select ‘Update driver’ option.
  4. In the next screen, you’ll be presented with two options; Search automatically both online and on your PC for the latest driver software or ‘Browse your computer for the latest drivers’. It is recommended to select the first option as chances are high you are going to get the latest drivers online.
  5. After searching and establishing the latest drivers for your device, Windows will prompt you to install it. In this scenario, as shown, best drivers have already been installed.

To automatically update your drivers

  1. Go to the Cortana search bar type ‘Control Panel’ and Press Enter
  2. Under ‘Hardware and Sound’ click on ‘View Devices and Printers
  3. Locate your PC and right click on it. In the menu that pops up, select ‘Device installation settings
  4. Select the Yes (recommended) option to have windows automatically download the drivers. Finally, save the changes

Driver issues can also be manually fixed using other vendor tools such as Driver doctor and Driver talent.

Run a test check on your RAM

If up to this point you are experiencing a Blue screen UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP error, a RAM memory test is required to perform a detailed test of your RAM module(s). This is because RAM is generally sensitive in nature and it’s always advisable to run a test when your system acts up. To accomplish this,

  1. Head out to the Cortana search bar and type ‘Windows Memory Diagnostics
  2. The next screen will present you with two options as shown below.

At this point, can decide to restart your PC to begin the RAM check process or wait up for the next restart. Upon completion of the test, results will be displayed. Should the memory module fail the test, an immediate replacement is advised because the module is irreparable.

In addition to the built-in Windows memory diagnostic tool, there are other third-party memory testing applications which you can download online. These include Memtest86, which is free to download.

Summing Up
In a summary, the UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP blue screen error is a major pain to Windows 8 & 10 users and one of the best ways to pinpoint the cause is to trace back to the last changes made to the system. In most cases, likely changes will include download and installation of faulty or incompatible device drivers, installation of incompatible hardware devices, malware infection or faulty RAM. In case you are having the Blue screen error, you are invited to try the above solutions and let us know how it went.

About the “UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP” error

This is a Blue Screen of Death error that is typically caused by two situations: either your CPU pushes an incoherent file to the kernel, or you have a fatal hardware failure. Driver incompatibility can also lead to this error. There are a few ways to troubleshoot and fix this error. Cleaning out dust from its hardware components is one way. But let’s look at the technical ways to go about things.

How to fix this problem

Method 1: Remove the new hardware

If you added/attached new hardware to your computer and then got this error, you should consider removing the hardware and restart your computer. Also, if you installed software and then started seeing this error, then you should consider a clean boot, or uninstalling the software (if you can).

Method 2: Scan your PC for any kind of malware

Malware could have caused the “UNEXPECTED KERNEL MODE TRAP” error; thus, running a check for malware can help to fix things. Use a reliable anti-malware utility to find and remove any malware that might have made its way into your PC.

Method 3: Use Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool

Another possible cause of this error is incompatible drivers: maybe you connected some new RAM that doesn’t work with other components of your computer. You should consider removing the RAM or run a check on your system’s memory using the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. If you’re able to boot the computer, follow the steps below:

  • Press Windows key + R and type “mdsched.exe”
  • Click on “Restart now and check for problems (recommended)”
  • Wait for the process to run completely, and your PC will reboot properly

Method 4: Scan with System File Checker

You can access Windows Command Prompt from the “Advanced settings” menu when you boot your computer from a bootable device. Afterwards, you can run the SFC command inside the Command Prompt terminal. However, if you can still access your desktop, then you should simply press Windows key + X to launch the context menu. Then you can click on “Command Prompt (Admin)” to launch Command Prompt.

Once you launch Command Prompt, enter this command: “SFC /scannow”
